Can You teach English in China without a degree?

You will see a lot written on this matter all over the internet.

After 18 years of teaching in China, and of owning my own school there, the short answer is ‘NO’.

Yes, you will find some websites which disagree with me, but the fact is that the local foreign affairs and visa sections won’t allow genuine schools to ‘legally’ hire people who are not native English speakers, and who don’t have a university degree.

I have worked in the south-west, south, central, eastern, and north-eastern parts of China, and have yet to find a local government authority that will ‘legally’ allow a foreigner to teach without a degree.

You can accept my advice, or that of others, but the consequences of the wrong decision are yours to carry.

It’s not unusual to get 20 or 30 days in a Chinese jail for working on the wrong visa.

If you don’t have a degree, there are other countries which will hire you with a TEFL only.

What qualifications do I need to teach English in China?

As mentioned earlier, you’ll need:

  • a university degree in any subject.

  • a TEFL certificate (or equivalent other certification), and

  • you must perform a criminal background check (CRB)

  • finally, all academic certification, and your CRB, must be apostilled by a notary public, to prove that thy are genuine; otherwise the embassy won’t issue you with the correct and required visa.
